The European Space Agency has had a lot of trouble in the last few years, with rockets blowing up and what not, but they've had a triumphs too. The Artemis satellite were put into geostationary orbit using ion thrusters pushing with 15mN from 31000km altitude to geostationary orbit, after the last stage of an Ariane rocket had failed to boost it all the way. Read their press release, it's a good story, what they did were a brilliant hack, much in the spirit of the Apollo 13 story, just without lives at stake.

I just read through this: "The Real Reasons for the Upcoming War With Iraq: A Macroeconomic and Geostrategic Analysis of the Unspoken Truth", also available as PDF. It was linked from a reaction to this opinionated piece by Tim May, which is also quite interesting.

I recommend you read it, at least if the title appeals to you, but it's a long read. We live in interesting times.
