The Hackers Mac OS X

Mar 17, 2005

I've been reading a lot of basic stuff about Mac OS X lately, and the best overview I've found so far is Amit Sings long but very enlightening “What is Mac OS X?”, I can only recommend it.

I must also recommend DarwinPorts, it's not very much like the usual BSD ports frameworks though, it is TCL based, not Makefile based, a little like Gentoo Portage in some ways. Most things are done through a port(1) command taking arguments in the style of cvs(1), eg. ‘port installed’ will show a list of installed ports, ‘port -vsc install postgresql’ will install PostgreSQL verbosely from source, cleaning up afterwards.
