PowerPC on the way out

So Apple is switching to Intel processors for their machines, starting early next year, completing the switch ultimo 2007.

Our goal is to provide our customers with the best personal computers in the world, and looking ahead Intel has the strongest processor roadmap by far, said Steve Jobs, Apples CEO. It's been ten years since our transition to the PowerPC, and we think Intel's technology will help us create the best personal computers for the next ten years.

It's a little sad that all PCs will soon be Intel based—monocultures are bad—but I doubt the transition will be very painful for end users. Programmers will feel some pain I guess, but I don't think it'll be that bad.

There will be lots of whining nonetheless.
