Mallorca training camp, the last two days
Thursday I did a short swim. Short because I had forgotten my earplugs, and when I get water in my ears I get dizzy, and with time, nauseous. I made it to 1000 m though. Later I went out for a tempo run, which was great, I did a 4′53″/km pace for 30 minutes + warm-up and cool-down.
Friday was travelday, we had to check out at noon at the latest, but the bus wouldn't come for us before 19.00, so there was ample time to get the last ride in.
We checed out around 10 or so, and went for a ride. Everybody wanted to do different things, so everybody ended up riding alone. I took what I'd call the quintessential Mallorcan mountain ride, from Portal Nous to Calvia, Es Capdella, Galilea, Puigpunyent and then following the roadsigns towards Banyalbufar and the rest of the coastal road down towards Andratx, then over Es Capdella and home the same way. A total of 90 km with no flat roads whatsoever.
It took me 4 hours!
And I worked very hard all the way going up, but since most of the mountain roads were still wet I took the downhills very slowly, I didn't want to risk crashing on the last day. But what a wonderful ride, it had everything, from inland mountain valleys, to the vistas of the north coast and everything from frustrating faux plat (“false flat”) to over 20% inclines up in the small streets of Galilea. No real flat road anywhere. Perfect.
The last full hour of that ride my thighs was so empty that they hurt all the time, even when I didn't pedal. The hills hurt more. A perfect last ride before leaving the island.
