The new LOOK/Polar Powermeter

I normally hear all the rumors about new bike tech of all sorts, but the 2010-09-01 introduction of the LOOK/Polar powermeter took me completely by surprise.

I really like the Polar heart rate monitors, but I dislike the fact that their otherwise excellent Polar Pro Trainer 5 software only works on Windows. And their old powermeter that worked by measuring the speed and vibration in the chain was really hard to use and adjust correctly.

But this new powermeter looks great, and they beat MetriGear to the market for a pedal based powermeter. Or maybe it’s the MetriGear technology they use?

No details available yet, but I can’t help but notice that the measurement part of the system is more or less independent from the Polar W.I.N.D. transmitters, so it is at least technically possible that someone could build ANT+ transmitters for the pedals instead.

It will be interesting to see what comes out from Interbike which just started today.
